Description
Yellow Desert Cactus Flowers. These grow all around the Southwest. I wanted to capture their delicate, waxy yet transparent nature. Though I did not capture the true colors of the dull smokey green pads I actually liked this better. They are a dusty blue green color in reality but part of being an artist is to be able to change the colors as we like them. I used a photograph I took years ago outside of Zion, Utah, to go by and used a combination of methods and effects on watercolor paper to achieve this painting. I should add I used tissue paper with clear resins to get the translucent effect of the flowers and even the pads. Up close I can envision their gentle beauty against the thorny pads of the cactus as light touches on the gentle petals while obscuring the hard prickly pads.
I am the yellow Cactus flower... beautiful in resiliency, long-lasting, and protective of myself!

Gorgeous semi-abstract artwork of Cactus Flowers! Love the colors and the nod to the beauty of these delicate flowers that appear magically on the pear cactus. Thanks for rekindling my memory of living in New Mexico!
